App Store 2.3.5 rejection: Choosing the app category

Apple thinks your app is in the wrong category. Guideline 2.3.5 asks you to choose the category that best describes the product, using Apple’s category definitions. A category with attractive traffic isn’t a good fit if users expect a different kind of app.

Identify the main job

Look at the experience after sign-in: what does a person spend their time doing, and why would they install it? We’d base the category on that main task, rather than one supporting feature.

For example, an educational product can include messages without becoming primarily a social network. Compare your app with the official category definitions, not just a similar-looking listing.

Correct the category and its explanation

Update the relevant category fields in App Store Connect. Check that the description and screenshots also communicate the same purpose. If you believe the existing category is right, explain the core workflow and how it fits Apple’s definition.

Verify the saved choice before resubmitting. Include a short route through the app demonstrating its primary use. Apple may change an inappropriate category itself, so address the underlying classification question in your reply.
