This guide is for iPhone and iPad apps asking users to restart devices or change unrelated system settings.
A troubleshooting prompt can itself be the problem Apple flags. Under 2.4.4, apps shouldn’t require or suggest device restarts or system-setting changes unrelated to their core functionality.
Check when the instruction appears
Reproduce the error that triggers the message. Look for requests to turn off Wi-Fi, disable a security feature, or restart the device as a routine step. We’d ask the developer to investigate the underlying failure rather than keep a workaround that changes the user’s whole device.
Repair the flow
Fix the connection, permission handling, or recovery behavior where possible. If a setting is genuinely needed for the feature, describe that relationship accurately and keep the request limited to it. Remove unrelated instructions from help pages and support text shipped inside the app too.
Test the original failure condition again and confirm the person can recover without the unnecessary change. Give Apple the triggering condition, corrected message or behavior, and the build where it is fixed.
