App Store 4.5.4 rejection: Push notification consent

By The Draftbit team · Updated

This guide is for iPhone and iPad apps requiring notifications, sending sensitive information, or using pushes for marketing.

A person can allow notifications without agreeing to every promotional message. Under 4.5.4, the app must work without push permission, avoid sensitive or confidential information in pushes, and obtain explicit in-app consent for promotional notifications.

Test refusal and marketing preferences

Install the app fresh and decline notifications. Can you still use its functions? Then inspect the separate explanation and choice for marketing messages. We’d check whether the opt-out actually changes backend delivery, not only the switch on screen.

Remove a notification-permission gate that prevents the app functioning. Keep private information out of push payloads and visible messages. Explain promotional delivery in the app’s interface and provide an in-app way to stop it.

Test opted-in, opted-out, and permission-denied accounts with fictional messages. Check scheduled campaigns after a preference changes. Tell Apple where the consent and opt-out controls appear and how you verified delivery. The operating-system permission prompt alone doesn’t explain your marketing purpose.
